Safaricom has declared a significant change to its M-Pesa service, prohibiting users from sending money to unregistered mobile accounts starting February 5, 2024. This strategic decision aims to bolster security and streamline transactions within the mobile money ecosystem. Registered customers, however, will continue to enjoy seamless money transfers, even across different mobile money providers. Safaricom urges unregistered users to swiftly register at Safaricom Shops or M-Pesa agents with valid identification.
In a pivotal announcement on Saturday, Safaricom revealed a transformative decision set to reshape the dynamics of its M-Pesa service. Starting Monday, February 5, 2024, customers will no longer have the ability to send money from M-Pesa to unregistered mobile accounts. This move is underscored by Safaricom’s strategic vision to fortify security measures and establish a more regulated framework for transactions within the mobile money landscape.
Emphasizing their commitment to the security of financial transactions, Safaricom assured registered customers that they would retain the privilege of seamlessly sending and receiving money, even when dealing with different mobile money providers.
A statement by Safaricom succinctly conveyed this development: “Effective February 5th, 2024, you will no longer be able to send money from M-Pesa to unregistered mobile money customers.”
Recognizing the impact of this decision on unregistered users, Safaricom issued a plea, urging them to take prompt action. The statement read, “We encourage customers who are not registered for mobile money services to register by visiting a Safaricom Shop or an M-Pesa agent with their identity document.”
In essence, Safaricom’s strategic move not only enhances security but also serves as a catalyst for unregistered users to swiftly embrace the registration process to continue enjoying the benefits of M-Pesa services.
